Finding Camping and Hiking Spots near Pittsburgh”  - by Niel Curlee

Some of you have asked me about how I found out about Otter Creek and Dolly Sods as good places to go for wilderness hikes.  There were two sources.  In those days the Pittsburgh Press had a very good writer on the subjects of conservation and outdoor recreation named Roger Latham.  He wrote a lot about how both areas were beautiful hiking areas and worth saving from mining and/or timber cutting.

Another source was Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Youth Hostels which I belonged to.  I didn't go on any of their hikes, I mostly did only climbing trips to Seneca Rocks or one day canoe/raft  trips.  Their monthly news letters frequently announced overnight hiking trips that they planned to Otter Creek and Dolly Sods.

I have been out of touch with the AYH for years, but they meet right around the corner in Mellon Park where they have their own building behind the Art Center at Fifth and Shady. – Neil Curlee
